The Calling
Chapter 12

On her 16th birthday, Thérèse refuses an arranged marriage. Her family, from Château Guibert, wanted her to marry the eldest son of a wealthy family from Orléans. She then slipped into an individual and mystical crisis that plunged her into a silence and muteness for 5 years. She found faith in God but lost the faith of her family and her carefree nature. Thus, the interplay of these two types of crises, and their conflicting interaction, determine the often excessive mystical behaviors religiously and spiritually. Thérèse, confronted with the social trials of her status, remained permanently blocked and ended up as an old maid but full of devotion until her last day; she was 43 years old.
