Stained Glass Museum in Chartres

Discover the Stained Glass Museum in Chartres, a historical place with ancient techniques and contemporary stained glass…

Unique in France, this museum is located 50 meters from Chartres Cathedral in the Loëns Cellar, one of the most remarkable Gothic cellars in France, classified as a Historical Monument. The Stained Glass Museum presents collections of ancient and contemporary stained glass, an interpretive tour of the cathedral’s stained glass, workshops of master glassmakers, and a unique collection of Renaissance stained glass from Chartres.

The permanent collection of 70 authentic Renaissance stained glass is on display on the first level of the Stained Glass Museum. A pedagogical room complements the visit with the presentation of all the cathedral’s stained glass windows, in the form of models and explanatory diagrams to identify all the depicted scenes in the stained glass.

The vast Gothic room with vaulted ribs in the basement hosts temporary exhibitions of contemporary stained glass.
